Breaking Through Genres with This Adaptation

Spike Jonze’s Adaptation (2002) is a wild genre-bending story that tests the limits of traditional filmmaking, breaks the fourth wall, and re-invents its own plot and direction with every scene. Charlie Kaufman (Nicholas Cage) is a twisted Hollywood screenwriter dealing with depression and the inability to take charge of his life. His current job is to adapt Susan Orlean’s (Meryl Steep) novel “The Orchid Thief” into a movie. Frustrated by his own life inadequacies and inconsistencies in Orlean’s book, Kaufman turns to the help of his overly-peppy, annoying twin bother, Donald, in order to finish the screenplay. Through their work together, they realize there is much more to the story than Orleans has written. An Academy Award nominee, Adaptation is a torrid tale, inspired by true events, that keeps the audience guessing.
